Anthony & Shirley Nolan Anthony & Shirley Nolan

As you may know, the proceeds of the New Year Firework's Display collection in 1994/5 and a donation from Stornoway & District was donated to the Trust, amounting to over £1,500.

In order to add new members to the bone marrow register, a donor clinic was run in Stornoway by the ANT Donor Recruitment Department. Thanks to those who turned up on the day. Special thanks to the nurses who attended.

Every year, thousands of people with bone marrow diseases such as leukaemia, aplastic anaemia and inborn metabolic and immune deficiency disorders, reach a stage where only a bone marrow transplant can possibly save them.

Family members, particularly brothers and sisters, can make the best matches. However, this is not always possible and patients must hope that an unrelated volunteer donor will be found.

There are now close to 362,000 people registered but more are needed.

KEY DONOR TARGET GROUPS:
The Trust urgently needs more donors in general, however, they are
particularly in need of donors from the following groups:
   - young donors
   - male donors
   - more donors from all ethnic minority groups

If you are between 18 and 40, please consider joining the register. A quick test is all that is needed to record your tissue type and that could enable you to save someone's life.

Joining the register is relatively simple but all donors should be made aware that there is a level of commitment required, and donating marrow does involve a hospital stay and travel to London (all loss of earnings and travel costs are covered by ANT), so please make sure you are aware of these implications before you join.

General criteria for donors joining The Anthony Nolan Trust

  1. - you must be aged between 18 and 40
  2. - you must weigh at least 8 stone and not be obese
  3. - you must be in general good health
  4. - you should discuss with your family before joining
  5. - you must be committed to staying on the register and make an informed decision when joining
  6. - you must be willing to donate to ANY patient that you may ever match. Please note that all donations are anonymous. ANT do not hold clinics to find matches for specific patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's hard to believe that it is now 30 years since Shirley Nolan set out on a quest to save the life of her little son, Anthony.
That challenge sadly failed, but thankfully Anthony's illness and subsequent death was not to be in vain. Since those early days thousands of patients throughout the world have been given the chance that Anthony Nolan never had . . . .the chance of life.

Volunteer donors are the lifeblood of the Trust and if you are young, fit and healthy we need to hear from you now - particularly if you are male.

Not eligible to join? Don't worry - you can still help. Without funding, the work of the ANT would not be possible.

The ANT needs at least £12.5m a year to fund its work. Perhaps you would like to help by making a donation? You can make a donation now using your credit or debit card.

Other ways to help:

Tidy Your Office and Save Lives!
The Trust is involved in a ‘green' fundraising scheme with waste management company, Reclaim-IT.

All ANT want from you are the empty printer and fax cartridges you have lying around in the office, which will then be recycled. Each is worth anything from 25p up to £6.00. There's no cost to you - just contact the regional Trust office and they will take care of the rest!

Mobile Phone Recycle
Instead of gathering dust on a shelf your old phone can be recycled for cash for ANT funds. Phones must be free of contract.
Contact the regional ANT Office.

Without the generosity of the public ANT would not be able to continue to offer patients the chance of life.
